Off-site Dog Walker Volunteer

Our Off-site Dog Walkers make a huge contribution to the health and happiness of our four-legged residents.

They help our Canine Carers make sure that our dogs have the essential exercise they need both on- and off-site. 

What will you be doing? 

  • Providing exercise to the dogs by taking them out for walks, and poop scooping after them. Dogs will be allocated by Rehoming Centre staff according to their individual needs. 
  • Reporting any concerns regarding each dog’s health and welfare to centre staff. 
  • Adhering to centre protocols for collection of dogs, walking routes and use of exercise compounds. 
  • Undertaking basic dog training in accordance with Dogs Trust training methods if required & trained to do so – we’ll give you full training if required. 
  • Using centre-approved equipment such as leads, harnesses and muzzles, when instructed. 
  • Completing animal records to confirm exercise and feeding as required. 
  • Reporting any faulty or damaged equipment to centre staff. 

We’re looking for someone with: 

  • A love of dogs, passion for dog welfare and experience in handling them. 
  • Good level of physical fitness for walking and handling dogs of all shapes, sizes and strengths and other physical duties. 
  • Excellent face-to-face communication skills with the ability to listen. 
  • Confident and friendly manner. 
  • Ability to work comfortably in a close-knit team or alone. 
  • Conscientious with a can-do attitude. 
  • Ability to follow instructions. 
  • A full UK driving licence with access to own vehicle if walking dogs off-site. 

What this role will offer you: 

We will provide you with a main contact who will manage your tasks, answer any questions you might have and help you with the volunteer rota.

You’ll also receive ongoing role-specific training, guidance and support as well as an opportunity to gain and develop new skills.

We will provide a Dogs trust volunteer uniform, and will recognise the work you are kindly undertaking by enrolling you in our Volunteer Merits Scheme.
